Course Marshals Needed!

Safety and security for our participants and spectators is our most important objective at GOTR 5K events. Course Marshals are positioned along the route, start line, and finish line. Become a Course Marshal and help us with this effort!

Who volunteers? Our volunteers are teachers, coaches (in any sport), runners, parents, employees of sponsoring companies, and high school students earning community service hours.

5K Run Volunteer (no running required!)

There is a 5K (3.1 miles) run at the conclusion of each 10-week Girls on the Run program. Each 5k event takes over 100 volunteers to be a success. We depend on volunteers to serve as course marshals, help with set up and tear down, manage start and finish lines, water stops, and much more. We have a job for everyone who wants to help!

GOTR NOVA is actively seeking volunteers to fill these positions for the Spring 2010 5K:

• Race Course Marshals: 4 team leaders and 40 day of event volunteers.

• Water Stop: 2 team leaders and 25 day of event volunteers.
Note: Booz | Allen | Hamilton, long time GOTR NOVA supporter, is Sponsor of the New Balance Girls on the Run 5K Water Stop. Only Booz Allen employees may register.

• Event Information: 2 team leaders and 16 day of event volunteers.

• Volunteer Coordination: 2 team leaders and 6 day of event volunteers.

• Runner Assistance: 2 team leaders and 6 day of event volunteers.

• GOTR Merchandise Sales: 2 team leaders and 4 day of event volunteers.

What is a Volunteer Team Leader?

If you have the time and desire to become part of the event management team as a volunteer, and to work closely with the Race Director and GOTR NOVA Executive Director, then serving as a Volunteer Team Leader may be for you. Volunteer Team Leadership requires a serious commitment of time for phone calls and meetings. Team Leaders will be asked to participate in two to three calls and/or meetings prior to the event. Team Leaders will supervise other volunteers at the event, and will make reminder phone calls to other volunteers the week before the event. For more information please contact Race Director Jeff Ruday at jeff@jeffruday.com.

Volunteer Road Runners

Each girl that participates in the 10-week Girls on the Run program will run in the 5K with a buddy runner. Typically this is a parent, sibling, relative or friend of the girl's family. In some cases a girl may not be able to find a suitable buddy runner. When this happens her GOTR Coach will turn to a pool of volunteers called "Volunteer Road Runners" who have signed up to volunteer and who are willing to run with a GOTR Girl.

As a Volunteer Road Runner your 5K registration fee will be waived, and if contacted by a GOTR NOVA Coach, you will be assigned to run with a GOTR Girl. Each season, we need a pool of about 25 Volunteer Volunteer Road Runners who are contacted a few days before the 5K on an “as needed” basis. We cannot promise that you will be needed as a Volunteer Road Runner. However, if you registered and are not asked to run with a girl, you are welcome to run in the 5K as our guest.

Girls on the Run International regulations requires GOTR NOVA to conduct a background check on all Volunteer Road Runners to ensure the safety of the girls. If you want to volunteer as a Volunteer Road Runner you will need to complete and sign an application form/waiver authorizing GOTR NOVA to conduct the background check. Once you register as a Road Runner, you will receive the application. Please complete and return by fax to 703.273.4016 or scan and email to info@gotrnova.org.

SoleMates Charity Runner

Join Girls on the Run SoleMates, our charity running program. We are a team of male and female athletes who pursue individual goals, such as running a marathon, to raise money for one of our 150+ Girls on the Run councils in the United States and Canada.

Individuals can sign up to run/walk/bike in any event of their choice and participate in Girls on the Run SoleMates. Registration for SoleMates does not include registration to the actual race. The runner/walker must still register for the event of their choice independently. These are two separate registrations.
