Volunteer to Coach

Volunteering as a coach with Girls on the Run is a life-changing experience. You share your time and energy, and help effect a positive self-image in girls ages 8-13. Our volunteer coaches are typically parents, coaches, runners, and teachers. High school students often volunteer as assistant coaches to fulfill community service requirements, or just because they love being exercise buddies and mentors to younger girls. You do not have to be a runner to be a Girls on the Run coach. The main requirement is enthusiasm!

Our volunteer coaches work with girls before or after school, leading them through the Girls on the Run-developed curriculum, stretching and running activities, and training for the end-of-season 5K run. Programs meet twice a week for 60-75 minutes. The program is offered twice a year from September-December (Fall Season), and March-May (Spring Season).

Coaches are expected to attend every session. In addition, all coaches attend a Coaches Training seminar at the beginning of the season, as well as a Mid-Season Meeting. Each Girls on the Run site has a head coach, and up to three assistant coaches. Girls on the Run of Northern Virginia head coaches are female.
